This is the roof top marque we are going to make.

We used extra letter sets for an "Open/close" Sign from an office supply store. (less than $20)

The letters out of the package.

The letters for my sign.

Becuase these were plastic they were spray painted with gray primer first. Let the primer cure. Then I used a flat red spray paint.

After studying severl photos of rooftop marques I came to the conclusion that every roof top sign installer must have had their own design for the sign mounting/bracing. So I made a template for what I wanted to use.

I used 1/16" x 1/16" strip wood for the bracing (about 33 cents) used 2-sided tape to hold the wood in place while I glued the cross-bracing pieces on.

The cross-bracing applies

Weights were used to keep the up-rights flat while the glue dried.

The horizontal front pieces were also taped down while the parts were glued together.

I used the angle weights to keep the up-riights square and even while the glue dried..

This is just another view without the weights in the photo.

Additional horizontal cross-bracing was glued to the back. Note that I chose not to paint the sign mount until it was all glued together. This is beucase the flat black could also cover any glue that had seeped out from the joints during the glueing/drying process.

Tacky Glue was used to glue the letters to the wood. White glue sticks good to wood but not plastic. ACC glues (such as super glue) sticks good to plastic but not wood. The Tacky glue (while close to white glue) is sort of a middle ground glue and it has a thicker consistancy than white glue.

The sign glued together.

The sign with dry brushing to accent the details.
